What is a Learning Management System?

A Learning Management System is a software or platform that helps you manage and track the delivery of your online courses and lessons. If you are embarking on a developing an online course, you will most certainly come across this term.

What are the key features of a good LMS?

A good Learning Management System (LMS) will allow you to easily manage your lessons and students. Here are some of the standard features of a good LMS:

  1. Organise and manage your students 
    A key function is the ability to manage student course registration. This is particularly useful if you run multiple courses for different learner groups. An LMS provides the ability to manage and track student registration and ensure that they are only provided access to their relevant courses.
  2. Provide lesson structure and syllabus
    A good course provides students with lesson structure and syllabus visibility. A good LMS will provide a course creator with the ability to outline their course lessons and topics. In addition, they will have the option to drip-feed or set pre-requisite lessons.
  3. Monitor the progress of students and their performance

    Capturing and analysing data has become an important function for many industries. The online teaching sector is no different. An LMS captures and stores data about your student, courses and course engagement behaviour.  With this data, one will be able to explore and extract insights.
